      • About me

I'm an Irish journalist, author and sometime teacher decamped from the Middle East to the American Midwest in 2018, from where I report on social justice, outdoor recreation and the news. I teach international journalism part-time at the University of Dayton.

Previously, I lived in Istanbul (2013-2017), Toronto (2012-2013) and Damascus (2007-2012).

I've reported from the Arctic, Mexico, Myanmar, Ireland, Serbia, Nepal, Lebanon, Ukraine, and a host of other countries. Check me out on Instagram: @stephenstarrjourno at stephenstarr.contently.com or Gmail: kilruanesstar

From Turkey, I covered the migrant and refugee crises, the country's autocratic turn and the rise of Islamic terrorism.

My work from and about Syria has appeared in The Times (UK), The Sunday Times, The Guardian, USA Today, ForeignPolicy.com and The Washington Post. TV appearances include CNN, BBC, Sky News and Al Jazeera English.

My book, 'Revolt in Syria: Eye-Witness to the Uprising' (Hurst and Oxford University Press: 2015), has been well received by the Economist, the Guardian, the TLS and others.

These days, my stories appear in National Geographic Travel, BBC News, the Irish Times and other outlets.

In 2020, I co-founded the Journalism Lab, a Dayton-based initiative that teaches communities in the Midwest and beyond to report on their own regions.
